Ray studied at Leeds College of Art, where he gained a Degree in Illustration and Graphic Design. This was followed by a Post Graduate Award of a years study in the Painting School.
After living in London and 20 years in educational publishing he made the switch to freelance and part time teaching. His real love of painting began to take more of his time. He was a member of the Hesketh Hubbard Society, was shown at the Laing, The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and The Royal Society of Marine Artists, winning the Charles Pears Award.
On moving to Cornwall Ray became a member of the St Ives Society of Artists where he served as a Director.
People are the subject of most of his paintings. They move about or settle down , making themselves into compositions. It is a joy to capture these brief moments.
